Governor Tom Corbett Speaks to Media
Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett held a brief press conference in front of reporters at the Penn Stater Conference Center. The presser was filled with a lot of “no comment”s lumped between a few bold statements–not surprising given that Corbett opened this investigation while serving as Pennsylvania’s Attorney General. Below is a quick recap for anyone who was not able to tune in.
- Before fielding questions, Corbett began with the following opening statements; “Universities by their nature are larger than any one figure. Penn State will continue with its excellence in education. The Board acted swiftly and decisively. Every Pennsylvanian who has read the grand jury report feels a sense of regret, but there can be no hesitation when it comes to the safety of children.”
- Corbett on the actions in downtown State College last night: “I do not believe in violence. There is no such thing. Please behave and demonstrate pride in Penn State. Your actions speak much louder than your words.”
- Before fielding questions, Corbett concluded his beginning encouraging any additional victims or witnesses to come forward. “As a state, we need to refocus on the victims and identify them.”
- Questions on Joe Paterno and Graham Spanier: Corbett was disappointed in their hesitation to take action. “I support the board’s decision. Their behavior led me to believe that they no longer had the ability to lead.”
- Corbett denied comment on the legal status of Graham Spanier and Mike McQueary, which was reiterated a second time. “The University has decisions to make.”
- On how The Second Mile charity organization may be impacted: “Relationships between outside charities and universities will need to be looked at.”
- Corbett continued to decline comment on any questions regarding the 2002 report involving McQueary and Victim 2. “You are getting into things I cannot comment on.”
- Corbett also declined comment on additional Jerry Sandusky rumors and whether or not Joe Paterno became bigger than the University.
- On if it is gratifying to see this finally come to light since Corbett began the investigation: “Yes.”
- On how this will impact Penn State: “I believe this institution has produced hundreds of thousands of excellent graduates.”
